Description
EISCAT is an international scientific organisation with member institutes in several countries. It conducts fundamental research in the upper atmosphere and the interactions between the Earth and space. It was established in 1976 and has successfully operated powerful ionospheric incoherent scatter radars in northern Fenno-Scandinavia since 1981, and on Svalbard since 1996.
It operates in three countries: Finland, Norway and Sweden, and all its facilities are located north of the Arctic circle. They are associated with their radar antennas, that are located in Kiruna, Sweden; Sodankylä, Finland; Tromsø, Norway and in Longyearbyen, Svalbard. In Tromsø they also have a combined ionospheric heating and short-wave radar facility.
